Building Blocks of Success: How Internships Get You to Where You Need to Be

When we think of the term intern, we may envision a television portrayal or recall someone else’s experience. Interns are the ones who fetch us coffee, answer all the phone calls, and do the work that no one else wants to do. With this in mind, we as interns can acknowledge that our position is just a teaser into what the real world will offer.  However, we also understand how valuable our time is and believe that our talents should be put to good use.

Before working here at Fusion, my fellow interns and I worked in multiple fields to gain any experience we could to put on our resumes. We did anything from part-time gigs to remote opportunities to working on extra projects with prestigious professors. For Ben, he discovered that being a part of a big team in a bigger company did not allow him the guidance he needed to complete a given task. As for Sam, who worked independently, he wished for more hands-on training.

As we advanced early on in our career, adulthood started to settle in. We wanted to look for ways to better our learning and gain more proficiency. When the time came to expand our horizons, all four of us took the initiative to secure a position within our second or third years in college. Finding a new internship or job could take weeks or even months, especially when your resume is fairly brief. That, however, never stopped us from at least trying.

When we found Fusion Biotec, being an intern did not mean doing the typical grunt work or sticking to routine coffee runs.  We were shown the respect and time needed to grow into our roles. For Ben, Amy, Sam, and myself, we all found our perfect spot here and couldn’t be more thrilled about the opportunities offered. As interns, we became more disciplined in planning, organizing, and time management. Though it was a challenge to catch on in the beginning, we could feel ourselves gaining more confidence in our abilities.

Being trained alongside some of the most experienced professionals in the field, we were able to make real contributions. Seeing our work unfold right before our eyes is such a unique process. Although labeled as interns, it never meant that we were not members of the team.

We are fortunate enough to work for a company that believes in treating its employees fairly, no matter their title. For those who are seeking to broaden their knowledge, our advice is simple; keep persisting.  You may get rejected from hundreds of opportunities, but that only means you are one step closer to finding your match. The anxiety of waiting to hear back some good news can wreak havoc, so do not stress about the unknown. Your hard work will pay off and by starting early, you’ll be one step ahead of the game.
